There are some sessions that just feel like summer.

Bare feet. Green mountains. Kids running around. Grandparents laughing. Nobody taking themselves too seriously. And, eventually, everyone ending up in the river.

That pretty much sums up my afternoon with the Augenzucker family.

We started their family session surrounded by everything I love about summer in Stowe the mountains were ridiculously green, the pond was still, and we had one of those beautiful Vermont afternoons that makes you want to stay outside forever.

With several generations together, we made sure to get those important everyone-is-here family photos (because those matter!), but then we let things loosen up.

And that's always when the magic happens.

The kids explored, climbed trees and ran through the grass. We photographed grandparents with their grandkids, individual families, siblings, snuggles and all the little combinations that become so important as the years go by.

But my favorite photographs are almost always the ones in between.

A baby tucked into Dad's chest. A grandparent cracking up with a grandchild. Kids who are almost done listening to me. Someone looking the wrong way. Everyone laughing because getting an entire extended family to cooperate at the exact same second is basically impossible.

That's real life. And that's the good stuff.

And Then We Found the River...

We eventually made our way to one of my favorite quintessential Vermont backdrops a covered bridge and the river running beneath it.

At that point, any idea of staying clean and dry was officially over.

Shoes came off. Everyone waded in. The kids splashed. The grown-ups joined them. And suddenly it didn't really feel like we were taking family photos anymore.

It just felt like a family having an afternoon together.

Those are the sessions I love.

Of course I want to give you the photograph where everyone is looking at the camera and smiling. But I also want the one where your kid is belly laughing. The one where Grandpa is squeezing his grandson. The one where everyone's clothes are a little wet and nobody cares anymore.

Because someday, I don't think you'll only want to remember what everyone looked like.

You'll want to remember what it felt like to be together.

And this one felt like pure Vermont summer.
